FZ followed a composition course in 1959 at [[Pomona College]], [[Karl Kohn]] (name-checked on the cover of "[[Freak Out!]]" (1966) under the heading "These People Have Contributed Materially In Many Ways To Make Our Music What It Is. Please Do Not Hold It Against Them"). He (FZ) was thrown out after a disagreement about [[Anton Friedrich Ernst von Webern|Webern]].

[[Pomona College]] was incorporated on October 14, 1887; instruction began on September 12, 1888. Pomona awarded its first diplomas to the Class of 1894. In recognition of the College’s rapidly growing stature, Southern California’s first chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was established there in 1913. Pomona became known for academic innovations. Located on what would later be known as the Pacific Rim, Pomona was a leader in Asian Studies as early as the 1930s, long before such programs were common. Pomona also was an early leader among liberal arts colleges in preparing students to excel in the natural sciences. Today, Pomona continues to innovate with a range of interdisciplinary programs that bridge the traditional boundaries between academic fields.
