He started his career playing at weddings. In 1974, he established the Trakia Orchestra, where his wife Maria Karafizieva was one of the singers. Due to the oppressive Communist regime he was only able to start recording his music in 1986. His music was also released outside his home country on his album ''[[Orpheus Ascending]]'' (1989), credited to ''Ivo Papasov and his Bulgarian Wedding Band'', where his way of combining traditional music with jazz influences was praised.
