Zappa's classic line about this is: "...if there's one thing I like it's, uh, audience participation"

Zappa's whole project is about activating the audience in some way, engaging the audience. He even talks in an early interview (original Mothers of course) about bringing out audience hostility on purpose, hoping to then 'polarize' that feeling. It's really quite brilliant. So, Zappa is using ironic understatement there, as so often. In fact, the idea that an audience *doesn't* participate in their own entertainment is what's strange, although that is kind of a typical industrial/American approach to it - passivity; music and other entertainments as mere marketing hooks or markers for 'lifestyle'. Audience participation is something else, and it doesn't have to include being at a concert,
Jonnybutterhttp://wiki.killuglyradio.com/index.php?title=Talk:Audience_Participation&diff=45887Talk:Audience Participation2020-12-28T11:44:36Z
Jonnybutter: Created page with "The classic line about this is: "...if there's one thing I like it's, uh, audience participation" Zappa's whole project is about activating the audience in some way, engagin..."

Don Harris (18 June 1938 - 30 November 1999) was an American rock and roll musician and electric violinist, name-checked in the inner sleeve of "Freak Out!" (1966), as part of Don & Dewey.

Biography
He learned some classical violin technique with 'a little old jewish man in the neighborhood' and formed The Squires with Dewey Terry in 1954. He initially used the name Don Bowman (his middle name), before reverting to "Don Harris" in 1957 when he became a duo with Dewey Terry as Don & Dewey. Between 1957 and 1959 Don & Dewey released several singles which never became hits for themselves, but did for others, one example being 'Soul Motion'. They split up and had a brief reunion as part of Little Richard's band in 1964. That same year Don & Dewey recorded a Beatles tribute with Larry Williams and Johnny "Guitar" Watson.

Harris toured with Johnny Otis in the late 1950s. Otis gave him the nickname "Sugarcane" and later Harris recorded for Otis' label Eldo in 1960. From halfway the decade on he recorded many sessions with John Mayall and Frank Zappa.

Zappa
"Sugarcane" provided (electric) violin and/or vocals for Zappa's records:
*Burnt Weeny Sandwich
*Weasels Ripped My Flesh
*Chunga's Revenge
*Apostrophe (')
*The Lost Episodes.

On 27 January 1980 Zappa was guest DJ on BBC Radio 1 during the Star Special, where he played Soul Motion by Don and Dewey.
Zappa's use of Local or Intra-Continuity
Zappa's albums frequently have a sort of meta-theme at the album level. The circulation of the 'My Sharona' bass lick as a sub-theme on the 'Man From Utopia' album is an example, and 'Zoot Allures' also has a musical meta theme: the heat generated by frisson between swung vs. straight 8th notes. A lot of music is about this, of course - it's where blues and jazz and gospel and rock come from. But he does this consciously as a unifying theme. Every song has variations on that rhythmic theme. It's super obvious in 'Disco Boy' (the 'doodie' part) and 'Friendly Little Finger', but it's all over the album. Just a typical little bomb Zappa liked to hide in his work that pops out at you when you least expect it. It has been many years obviously since Frank passed, and I still notice new things like this. It's not my imagination - he put that stuff in there on purpose.Jonnybutter
Jonnybutterhttp://wiki.killuglyradio.com/index.php?title=Talk:Love_Songs&diff=45861Talk:Love Songs2020-11-29T19:22:40Z
Jonnybutter:

For what it's worth, I agree with Duncan here. Many of the songs listed as having 'no humorous lyrics' do indeed have humorous lyrics. One obvious example, though hardly the only one, is 'No No No': "Gave my Money All to You/You Took My Watch and Pawned it too/Three gold teeth and one glass eye/Didn't have the nerve to say goodbye'.
Zappa targeted love songs several times in interviews and his own songs. I only added a few more "serious" songs to prove that not every song he wrote dealt with love in a satirical way. User:Spider of Destiny
:You (and other users) always ask me for sources or examples to prove claims. Explaining and sourcing information is neccessary to make other users understand the article or to let them know which links exist that provide more information to an article. But sometimes it's unavoidable, especially when you try to explain how Zappa or another person in his life or career felt about a certain topic.
An interesting thing about this song is the recurrence of the 'My Sharona' bass lick, in this case, the instrumental interlude with the fast guitar lick, e.g. underneath the lyric 'SPACE WARP'). This lick assumes a kind of a serial nature on the album; it's also on 'Tink Walks Amok', which on the original album came just before 'The Radio is Broken'. I also heard a rehearsal tape somewhere that had a very elaborate. atonal sort of loop melody, the basis of which is that 'Sharona' lick. It sounded like a variant of 'The Radio is Broken'.

:Problem number 734...
::it's also on 'Tink Walks Amok', which on the original album came just before 'The Radio is Broken'.

:Having split things down to song titles we have painted ourselves into a corner and we do not have a satisfactory way to present the variations, interpretations and cross referencing that Zappa used. Some may say that we just keep expanding by adding articles and categories but that mostly adds to the hundreds of dead end/orphaned pages that are of little value to anyone.

:So how do we tie all this together in coherent readable articles?

I don't see any way to organize this other than in our minds, although an essay on the topic would be good. But this is something Zappa did all the time - a theme would recur serially but often so subtly that you don't notice it. This was especially effective in this case when the two songs were adjacent, but Zappa himself changed the sequence, so..whatever (he also sabotaged touches like this frequently, but with the assumption that the listener would remember both versions - for example, 'Little Umbrellas'). I thought it was worth mentioning, since I didn't see that anyone else had spotted it. There are lots of other examples, but the fact that it's 'My Sharona' makes it particularly hilarious.
Jonnybutterhttp://wiki.killuglyradio.com/index.php?title=Talk:The_Radio_Is_Broken&diff=45778Talk:The Radio Is Broken2020-11-26T23:06:01Z
Jonnybutter: Created page with "An interesting thing about this song is the recurrence of the 'My Sharona' bass lick, in this case, the instrumental interlude with the fast guitar lick, e.g. underneath the l..."

A Zappa wiki relates to Zappa and his works. Unless Venet produced anything with/for Zappa he should not be listed as a producer in a Zappa wiki - as is the case with most people categorised as producers. Duncan (talk) 12:49, 25 August 2014 (PDT)
I don't want to just edit it out without telling anyone, so I'll leave this here and let someone else do it? Not sure what the protocol is. Venet didn't write 'Daydream Believer' as the main page says. There is a version of this song on the Jean Luc Ponty album 'King Kong'. It's pretty different to the 'Chunga' version. There is new written material on it, it's even slower than the 'Chunga' version, and features Ernie Watts on sax. You could almost call this a Zappa album since he is the 'arranger' and wrote all but one song. Richard Bock is credited as the producer, but he's more of an executive producer (the budget guy). It's a Zappa production in all but name.
“Twenty Small Cigars” (a pack of cigarettes) is an outtake from the Hot Rats sessions and features Max Bennett on stand-up bass. Both the guitar and overdubbed harpsichord are played by Frank.
Notes About This Song
“W-P-L-J” was originally recorded by The Four Deuces (Music City 790, 1955); The B-side, Here Lies Love, was also covered by the Mothers. FZ sings lead with Lowell George. Roy Estrada’s Spanish ad-libs at the end of “WPLJ” include, when translated, the advice to Motorhead (who’s yelling replies in the background) that getting a girl buzzed on the drink might make him “more attractive to fuck.”

A different song "White Port And Lemon Juice" was recorded by The Bel-Aires; and The Feathers mention the drink on "Shake 'Em Up" the B side of Johnny Darling.

WPLJ was a big sensation when it was released, hence another song on the same topic. The song was so popular that a radio station in New York changed their call letters to 'WPLJ'. It's such a classic for R&B fans that there are many covers, including one by Darryl Hall (of Hall and Oates), who does it faster than the original (google it - it's out there on YouTube somewhere). The Zappa/Mothers version is a bit slower than the original.
It was the blackest night

There was no moon in sight

You know the stars ain't shinin'

'Cause the sky's too tight

I heard the scarey wind

I seen some ugly trees

There was a werewolf honkin'

'Long the side of me

I'm mean 'n I'm bad, y'know I ain't no sissy

Got a big-titty girly by the name of Chrissy

Talkin' about her 'n my bike 'n me . . .

'N this ride up the Mountain of Mystery, mystery

I noticed even the crickets

Were actin' weird up here

'N so I figured I might

Just drink a little beer

I said, "Gimme summa that what yer suckin' on . . . "

But there was no reply

'Cause she was gone . . .

"Where's those titties I like so well, 'n my goddamn beer!"

Is what I started to yell, then I heard this noise

Like a crunchin' twig, 'n up jumped the Devil . . .

He's about this big . . .

He had a red suit on

An' a widow's peak

An' then a pointed tail

'N like a sulphur reek

Yes, it was him awright,

I sweared I knowed it was

He had some human flesh

Stuck underneath his claws

You know, it looked to me

Like it was titty skin

I said, "You sonofabitch!"

'Cause I was mad at him,

Well he just got out his floss

'N started cleanin' his fang

So I shot him with my shooter,

Said: BANG BANG BANG

Then the sucker just laughed 'n said:

Terry:

Oh, put it away . . .

You know, I ate her all up . . . now what you gonna say?

FZ: Let go of your pickle

Terry: What?

FZ: Let go of your pickle!

Terry: I'm not holding my pickle

FZ: Well, who's holding your pickle then?

Terry: I don't know . . . ha! She's out in the audience . . . Hey, Dale, would you like to come up here and hold my pickle to satisfy this weird man out here on the stage?

FZ: You're probably wondering why we call it a pickle . . .

Ray: Ha ha ha!

Terry: Oh, no . . .

FZ: I don't . . . I hate . . . I hate to squeal on you, Bozzio, I mean, Devil . . . but, look, I'm only interested in two things . . .

Terry: Now, wait a minute . . . all I have to say is God help me! . . . Even though I have this . . . this fucking mask on . . .

FZ: Ha ha ha ha ha . . . ! Listen, if you think that mask looks bad, you oughta see his pickle . . . I'm only interested in two things, that's titties and beer, you know what I mean?

Terry: What?

FZ: Yeah . . .

Terry: Titties and beer?

FZ: Titties and beer, titties and beer, titties and beer, titties and beer, titties and beer, titties and beer, titties and beer, titties and beer . . .

FZ: Alright!

Terry:

Hold on a second, boy . . .

'Cause that's Magic Ink!

And then the Devil let go of his pickle

'N out jumped m'girl

They heard the titties PLOP-PLOPPIN'

All around the world, she said:

"I GOT ME THREE BEERS 'N A FIST FULLA DOWNS,

AN' I'M GONNA GET RIPPED, SO FUCK YOU CLOWNS!"

Then she gave us the finger,

It was rigid 'n stiff,

That's when the Devil, he farted

An' she went right over the cliff

(Whoa . . . Tinsel Time!)

Well, the Devil was mad

I took off to my pad

I swear I do declare!

How did she get back there?

I swear I do declare!

How did she get back there?

FZ: Awright . . . awright, that . . . that's enough for the Devil and his famous pickle . . . We're goin' to make another dramatic if . . . if somewhat . . . rickety segue into another song called Cruisin' For Burgers, wait a minute . . .
Notes About This Song
The Devil mentions that he has the souls of Milhouse Nixon and Agnew too and that "both of those suckers were worse than you." At the time Nixon was forced to resign because of the Watergate Affair and Agnew due to bribery. Both were symbols of the corruption of the Nixon administration.

After 1979, when Zappa performed this song live, he sometimes changed the name of the soul that the Devil had into Khomeini.

This song is also a humorous take on Stravinsky's "L'Histoire du soldat" in which the protagonist has a similar encounter with The Devil
Wo, are we movin' too slow?

Have you seen us,

Uncle Remus . . .

We look pretty sharp in these clothes (yes, we do)

Unless we get sprayed with a hose

It ain't bad in the day

If they squirt it your way

'Cept in the winter, when it's froze

An' it's hard if it hits

On yer nose

On yer nose

Just keep yer nose

To the grindstone, they say

Will that redeem us,

Uncle Remus . . .

I can't wait till my Fro is full-grown

I'll just throw 'way my Doo-Rag at home

I'll take a drive to BEVERLY HILLS

Just before dawn

An' knock the little jockeys

Off the rich people's lawn

An' before they get up

I'll be gone, I'll be gone

Before they get up

I'll be knocking the jockeys off the lawn

Down in the dew
Not exactly a cover, since Zappa and George Duke co-wrote the song, but it's on George Duke's outstanding album from the early 70s called "The Aura Will Prevail". Duke originally wrote the song as a gospel parody, and his version is in keeping with that - much different from the Zappa version. Zappa wrote the words, not the music.

Notes About This Song
Uncle Remus is a fictional character from the stories of Br'er Rabbit by Joel Chandler Harris. He is an old, jolly black slave working in the cotton fields who enjoys telling children stories about B'er Rabbit.

This is clearly a song about the civil rights movement in the United States as Zappa saw it in 1974.

It is easy to compare this song to one of Zappa's few prior songs about race relations, 1966's "Trouble Every Day", a look at the Watts riots from the perspective of a numb television viewer. That song took a long, hard look at both the blacks who were burning down buildings and attacking merchants because "a few of them were white" and the racist that sought to "do you in/ because the color of your skin/ just don't appeal to him".

Somehow, "Uncle Remus" is more terrible in that it paints a picture of blacks as having largely given up the fight. They accept the fire hoses turned on them, and casually say that it's not so bad as long as it's not winter time, when the water is cold.

Instead of standing up for themselves, the would-be nephews of "Uncle Remus" are excited about the potential of their afros growing out and enjoying how snappy they look in their new clothes. If that's not superficial enough, their way of "fighting back" is by sneaking around in the predawn hours and vandalizing the yard ornaments of rich white folk.
Terry Bozzio is heard complaining about his hands aching from playing so many shows and playing his drums so hard - "I feel like I've been hitting my goddamn hands with a hammer!" This title to Bozzio's drum solo is a reference to one of Zappa's (and many others who like 20th century music) favorite Pierre Boulez pieces, "Le Marteau sans maître' (The Hammer Without a Master).
Andy Devine (October 7, 1905 – February 18, 1977) was an American actor, best known for his role as comic sidekick in many westerns, including "Stagecoach" (1939), with John Wayne.

Andy Devine is referenced in "Andy": on One Size Fits All (1975): "Andy Devine had a thong rind/ it was sublime/ but the wrong kind."

According to Nigey Lennon, 'Andy' was about her, and Zappa's break up with her. The 'thong rind' was apparently some kind of thong footwear, like a flip flop.

Ronald Reagan (February 6, 1911- May 5, 2004) was a former Hollywood B-movie actor who was Governor of California from 1967 to 1975. He was President of the United States from 1980-1988.

The Reagan administration was also noted for spending millions of dollars on defense, especially against international communism. During the early 1980s Reagan was both praised and criticized for his aggressive denouncing of the Soviet Union (even calling it "the evil empire" in 1983). His government ordered several nuclear missiles to be placed in Europe, which lead to large protests in the continent. In 1983 Reagan introduced his Star Wars defense plan, intended to protect the U.S against possible space missiles. After Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev became Soviet leader in 1985 Gorbachev and Reagan started more peaceful negotations and signed several treaties decreasing both countries' nuclear arsenals. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and total collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Reagan is often seen as the man who ended the Cold War, even though this honor could also be attributed to Gorbachev.

Reagan's foreign policy was criticized for financially supporting several dubious organizations and Presidents in their battle against Communism, including Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden. After a left-wing military coup in Grenada in 1983 Reagan sent troops to succesfully restore the old regime. In 1985-1987 Reagan ordered bombings in Libya in reaction to several terrorist attacks supported by Muhammar Khadaffi.

In 1986 the Iran-Contra affair severely damaged President Reagan's believability. He and several other U.S. officials, including Oliver North, Ed Meese, Caspar Weinberger and John Poindexter secretly faciliated the sale of weapons to Iran in exchange for hostages so that the money could be used to finance the Contra rebels in Nicaragua who wanted to overthrow the socialist government in Nicaragua. Under the Boland Amendment, further funding of the Contras had been prohibited by the U.S. Congress, making the entire affair illegal. While North, Meese, Weinberger and Poindexter were forced to resign and convicted, it remains unclear how much Reagan knew about these illegal proceedings. The Tower Commission, who investigated the case, could not find direct evidence that he had prior knowledge of the program, but did claim that he as President was responsible and should've informed himself more about these activities.

Reagan also introduced a new economic system, which was criticized for causing huge budget deficits and quadrupling the United States national debt. His political and social views were supported by the religious right, the so-called Moral Majority, which consisted of controversial preachers like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell.

Today Reagan is still an icon for Republicans and conservatives and considered to be the most influential American President since Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s-1940s.

Frank Zappa was very critical about the Reagan administration. As early as the 1960s Zappa criticized Reagan, while he was still Governor of California. The liner notes of We're Only In It For The Money (1968) mention that the concentration camp in The Chrome Plated Megaphone Of Destiny is called "Camp Reagan". The song Agency Man, performed during the 1968 concert in the Royal Albert Hall in London, was inspired by Reagan (the give away line is "From the heart of old Death Valley, to the ruling of our land" Reagan hosted a TV show in the early 60s called 'Death Valley Days'. That show is also mentioned in'The Blue Light' which was released just before Reagan took office as president: "Death Valley Days, straight ahead! The future is scary - YES IT SURE IS").

During the 1980s, when Reagan became U.S. President, Zappa targeted his administration very directly. In the music video of You Are What You Is (1981) a lookalike of Reagan is featured on the electric chair. Reagan is mentioned in Zappa's songs The Untouchables, Star Wars Won't Work, Dickie's Such An Asshole, When The Lie's So Big, Reagan At Bitburg, the Broadway The Hard Way version of What Kind Of Girl Do You Think We Are? and Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk. Reagan is also a character in Dio Fa.

During the 1984-1985 PMRC debates Zappa wrote Reagan a letter of protest (Z-Pack - Letter to the President). He received no reply.

Zappa had a poster on the wall portraying Ronald Reagan in nazi uniform, featuring the words, "He has the right to do anything they want" written underneath. He talked about it during the Pulse Interview, April 1993: "Plastic People is especially relevant today in the United States," he says, in reference to a poster on the wall portraying a Hitler-like Ronald Reagan with the words, "He has the right to do anything they want" written underneath. Zappa then recites a few lines from the song: "Take a day and walk around / Watch the Nazis run your town/ Then go home and check yourself/ You think we're singing 'bout someone else?"'

During a photo shoot for the cover of Video From Hell (also used in a chapter of The Real Frank Zappa Book) Zappa had a quote from Reagan during the Republican Convention in 1988 written on the wall: "Facts are stupid things."

Ronald Reagan was also mentioned in the liner notes of The MOFO Project/Object (2006) album.

Zappa about Ronald Reagan
"The fact of the matter is that if I do an album that has any kind of a vocal on it from now on, the chances are that that vocal is going to be about a sociological or political topic. For example, I thought of one that I want to do just the other day called "Lie To Me," which would deal with a catalog of everything that the Reagan administration has been able to get away with for the last six years. That would be a worthwhile thing to stick in there." - Frank Zappa in Sample This!.

"Mount Rushmore should either be replaced or have a companion. Another part of the mountain, carved up with some heads that had the biggest influence on what America is today. His head should be there. J. Edgar Hoover's head should be there. Nixon's head should be there. And Reagan's head should be there. These people have done more damage to the idea of Democracy than anybody-from another country- could ever imagine." (FZ in The Lost Interview, part 1 of 7, 1990)

After Zappa voiced his intention of running for President, a journalist asked him what would make him different in comparison with other Presidents: "I work more hours. And I'm awake!" (FZ, interview in Ein Leben Als Extravaganza - Das Genie Frank Zappa.)
The opening ostinato figure (played on harp) is a re-writing of the theme song of a long-running American soap opera called 'The Days of Our Lives', which ran in the afternoon and was for bored, possibly sad, American housewives. It went on the air in 1965, and is still on, although the theme - which is well known to an American over about 50) changed in the early 1990s. The ostinato in the intro to the tv show plays underneath a voice over: "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives." 'Days of our Lives' would qualify as what Zappa called an 'American Musical Archetype'
Notes About This Song
The opening ostinato figure (played on harp) is a re-writing of a long-running American soap opera, which ran in the afternoon and was for American housewives. It was very cheap to produce, started in 1965, and is still on the air, although the theme changed in the early 1990s. The voice over in the intro to the show plays a similar figure to Zappa's in 'Sad Jane' underneath a voice over: "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives."
Notes About This Song
The title is a play on the Debussy prelude called "The Girl With the Flaxen Hair", which was musically quoted in the song 'Status Back Baby' from 'Absolutely Free' (during the part with the lyric, "I'm losing status at the High School/I used to think that it was my school").

An interesting, possibly not entirely reliable, book. It's really the first book about Zappa that tries to deal with his biography and personality. Frank was initially cooperative with the author, but soon withdrew that cooperation, and even tried to suppress the book (as I recall). Zappa's father, Pamela Zubrica, Beefheart, other people in Frank's life (like his High School english teacher), and some of the original Mothers did interviews for it, as did Frank himself. There's nothing else like it in the books about Zappa. Remember, it was written pretty early and came out in 1972.

I gather from reading interviews with Walley (the author) later on that he lacked some of the, let's call it 'mental hygiene' to be up to this kind of challenge; he sounded like either a burn-out, or maybe he was always a sloppy thinker. But I think also that Frank must have been upset at having his personal life so exposed, accurate or not. Like a lot of public figures he was a very private person - more so than most, I would guess. I think he had a right to that privacy.

It's still worth reading as a document though. In the blurbs for the book there's a quote from Frank saying that it will be read for a long time, but that is taken out of context: he was *complaining* about that fact, that there was a lot of wrong information in the book that would live on for years.

I haven't looked at it since it came out, but I read the hell out of it back in then, so it's pretty imprinted. Don't know if they changed things in later editions.
Jonnybutterhttp://wiki.killuglyradio.com/index.php?title=Talk:No_Commercial_Potential:_The_Saga_of_Frank_Zappa&diff=44396Talk:No Commercial Potential: The Saga of Frank Zappa2020-10-26T22:34:17Z
Jonnybutter: Unique Zappa book.
Lyrics
Listen carefully, spider of destiny

You must heed the call of cosmo-biology

Listen to me

If you eat the earthlings now

Things will all be fine and then

We’ll repair our love somehow

And resume the busy schedule of our ruthless conquest once again

Listen carefully, spider of destiny

I will not allow this marvelous opportunity to be taken from me

Taken from me ...

Eat the earth people, eat them and chew them and brutally

Stomp on the rest of what’s left and then report to me

For the conquest of earth and the moon and the stars

And the space in between, all the comets and stuff will be ours

Eat the earth people, eat them and chew them and brutally

Stomp on the rest of what’s left ...
