CB provided vocal to Lumpy Gravy uncredited.

CB played sax for one of the Royce Hall Concerts that were the basis for Orchestral Favorites - at the very end of one of the concerts, according to Matt Groening. Matt reported that at the end of the concert, after all the musicians had left, Don appeared, sax in hand. He played freely for a few minutes.

Jeezus! Good luck piecing this one together! What a conveluted mess...

AKAs?

Are there any references to support AKA The Spotlight Kid?

Grow Fins '65-'82 CD featuring FZ

This 5 CD set is pure Beefheart gold.

CDs 3 & 4 will give you an idea of the enormity of the task FZ took on in producing "Trout Mask Replica". Very amusing too. CD 5 - track 15 has a brilliant FZ acoustic with Don in great voice, sounding more like Howlin' Wolf than ever...

There's also a book bound into the sleeve that is jam-packed with info.

(My copy cost £85 eight years ago, so it might not be easy to find).

You were robbed Duncan 08:17, 11 May 2008 (PDT)

Sorry, that price included 'The Dust Blows Forward'. Had 'Grow Fins'imported, got first-issue copy of the 2000, which on your Amazon link (thanks for that) shows a 1st going for £75. (Only one left at circa £56 - no clarification of pressing) Both my copies have only been opened about 6 times. Guessing the future 8 years ago was no easier than it is today. Not sure I was robbed. --Tonefish 10:33, 11 May 2008 (PDT)

But has anyone ever referred to Beefheart as The Spotlight Kid ? Duncan 08:19, 11 May 2008 (PDT)

I think not. Don doesn't refer to The Spotlight Kid in the 1st person. Indeed, The Spotlight Kid is female and she 'stole' the Ice Cream Man's a la modes & the pie from old Momma Eye... Window. Can't see someone calling the Captain after a baby girl born in the corn. --Tonefish 10:48, 11 May 2008 (PDT)

FZ Compilations featuring Beefheart

The Zappa compilation Strictly Commercial features Don's harmonica on San Ber'dino, taken from One Size Fits All, where he is credited as Bloodshot Rollin' Red.

Early Don van Vliet / Zappa collaborations appear on Mystery Disc as I Was A Teenage Malt Shop, The Birth Of Captain Beefheart, Metal Man Has Won His Wings & Don Interrupts.

Don also features on 'Torture', taken from 'YCDTOSA Vol 4' on the Ryko compilation Cheap Thrills
