Geoffrey Arnold ("Jeff") Beck (born June 24, 1944 in Wallington, Greater London, England) is an English guitarist and songwriter. Though he played in several influential bands in the 1960s and 1970s (notably in The Yardbirds) Beck has maintained a sporadic solo career over the last 25 years. Despite never attaining the commercial viability of his contemporaries, Beck has gained widespread critical acclaim, especially in the guitar playing community.
Beck is often referred to in Zappa's work, mostly with the catchphrase "more fluid than Jeff Beck". References include:
- "Magic Fingers" on 200 Motels
- "Titties 'n Beer" on Zappa In New York
- "Punky's Whips" on Zappa In New York
Zappa also named Beck one of his favorite guitarists in the interview Dynamo Frank.
"I like Jeff, yeah. I've listened to Wired ( Epic), and there are a couple of solos on there that I like. And I like some of his stuff on "Rough and Ready" (Epic)." -Frank Zappa, One Size Fits All Interview.
"One of my favorite guitar players on the planet. From a melodic standpoint and just in terms of the conception of what he plays, he's fabulous. I like Jeff." - Frank Zappa , The Frank Zappa Interview Picture Disk, pt.2
