Lyrics

A year ago, today,
Was when you went away
But now you come back, knocking on my door
And you say you're back to stay, but I say,

"Go cry on somebody else's shoulder
I'm somewhat wiser now,
And one whole year older
I sure don't need you now
I don't love you anymore

"You cheated me, baby,
And told some dirty lies about me
Foolin' 'round with all those other guys
That's why I have to set you free
I sure don't need you now
And I don't love you anymore

"A year ago today,
Went away
And now you come back crying
Crying, darling, please let me in
I don't need you, no,
I don't love you anymore
So go lean on... go cry on
Somebody else's door

"Go cry on somebody else's shoulder
I'm somewhat wiser now,
And one whole year older
I sure don't need you now
I don't love you anymore
Oh, my darling,

"Go ahead and cry
Go ahead and let the tears fall out of your eye
(Darling)
Let 'em fall on your dress
Who cares if it makes a mess?
I gave you my high school ring
At the root beer stand
We had a teen-age love, baby
I thought it was sharp
It was really so grand, but

"You cheated me, baby,
And told some dirty lies about me
Foolin' 'round with all those other guys
That's why I had to get my khakis pressed
I sure don't need you now
And I don't love you anymore

"Ba- baby,
Baby, I love you so much, darling
(I, oh, I love you)
Why don't you dig me?
(Baby)
I... I dig you
But you don't dig me
I don't understand what it is
(Oh, ?, baby)
I... I had my car reupholstered
I got my hair processed
(Oh, I love you)
Got a nice pompadour job on it
(Oh, my baby)
I bought a new pair of shoes
I got some new khakis
(Oh, my love)
And I met you
And we went out to get a Coca-Cola"

Notes About This Song

"Go Cry on Somebody Else’s Shoulder" was written at a piano by Zappa and Ray Collins at Studio Z in the early ‘60s.

FZ liner notes on "Freak Out!" (1966): "'Go Cry On Somebody Else’s Shoulder' is very greasy. You should not listen to it. You should wear it on your hair."

"All the songs are derivative of rock 'n' roll and one, 'Go Cry On Somebody Else's Shoulder', is a perfect satire of the archetypal woebegone teen-age rhythm and blues ballad. The gibbering falsetto and bass accompaniments set an ideal background for inane lyrics about a boy giving his love his high school ring at the root beer stand, having his car reupholstered and his khakis pressed but still being deserted by the girl. – Los Angeles Times, 1966, "Popular Records - Pass Aspirin, Please", Pete Johnson
