William Manchester (April 1, 1922- June 1, 2004) was an American author, biographer and historian. He did military service during World War II and fought in the Pacific.

He is best known for his book "The Death of a President" (1967), a detailed account of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Though JFK's widow Jacqueline Kennedy originally supported Manchester's research she later filed a lawsuit before the book's publication. After an agreement that Manchester would drop certain passages about Kennedy's family life the book was published and immediately became a best seller.

During a 1988 interview with Thierry Ardisson the journalist asked Zappa some questions from Marcel Proust's questionnaire. When he asked Zappa to name his favorite author Zappa answered "William Manchester".
