Frank was right then and he is correct today.

I am here to tell you that the entire Ryko Frank Zappa Cataloge Has been purchased by Warner Music Group. As you all know Frank pointed out that the Warner Music Group is a bunch of criminals. Here is the proof of this crime. Say,

Getting rid of the boxes

Should we just have sub headings like we do in the rest of the wiki:

I do not find that the boxes enhance or clarify anything on the page.

Duncan 04:32, 3 Sep 2006 (PDT)

Hi Duncan,
actually I used to like these boxes which were very compact. But I also agree that changes are needed there and like what you are doing. IMO the main page should be more simple and visual and provide fast and easy access, so the first paragraph which contains a bit of history and guidelines should rather be put elsewhere (at the end ?).

I might create a temporary "sandbox" Main Page in order to put my suggestions in it.

Hi, Sysops
How about some changes with the New Year AND celebrating the 4.000+ articles here?!
Like a new aphorism:

“... It is the tradition in America to reward artistry with contempt and ignorance with outrageous praise. Americans live in terror of excellence and will do ANYTHING to avoid contact with it. Those who attempt it are murdered by prolonged exposure to video radiation.”

Sorry to ask: I assume everybody knows what's going on but me. Do you know where went the FZ chronology on
http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/chronology/index.html
Or do you know anyone who has a copy I can download or something. I am lost without it!
Is this the ZFT thing going on?

Zappa Wiki Jawaka X.0

With the growing amount of information, beginning with the pictures I gathered on my hard disk, a thought began to emerge: I would like to arrange ... would it be possible to organize all these pics (and then all available - all ever made) in their historical order? That lead to ...
Imagine that: Watching a multi-track movie with all pictures of FZ in the best resolutions in correct order of time, beside a soundtrack of all his music that he thought of, heard, created, produced, beside a movietrack of all available surroundings, pictures, movies, sites, people in his view, all movies that he made, all texts he wrote or interviews he gave, all playing side by side on a giant split-screen.
And you can always push Pause or Replay, maybe even Fast Forward and Back, but no Record-button, because one could always have this on a gazillion-terabyte-storage-medium for later consumption. When is "Later"? ... will you ever get out of this room where we all sit and watch? The Ultimate Timeless Zappa Experience.
One of you know "The River Planet" by Philip Jose Farmer, where aliens recorded the whole life of all earthlings from Neanderthal to the extinction of mankind? Or consider the project to reassemble a crashed jumbo jet?

Timeframe: Category by Year?

Hi to all on high, from Tonefish...

I wasn't sure where to flag this thought, so here's as good a place as any.

Sometimes I seem to spend ages going back 'n forth, correlating dates to accomplish seemingly simple tasks of putting Mr X or Action Z into a timeframe with FZ, not only in external site research but here in the wiki too.

Would it be possible (indeed, is it a good idea) to have a Category:Year, ideally in the "Navigation Box" called something like "Timeframe"? e.g. Category:1967 Category:1986 etc.

Every single page in the wiki would then end up in the list under their respective times of occurence...(eventually, as we readers/you editors add in the dates category at the foot). So, a click on "what links here" would give me other events in the same year. In a way, it would be a kind of "Biography by default". (A 'search' by typing in a year doesn't always give me a clear picture).

This 'Category by year' would enable me to find

  • date a musician or supporting cast member first appeared
  • clusters of articles by date, despite random titles
  • relationship of recordings to other items/articles & tour dates, etc
  • and a whole bunch of other stuff...

Am I being silly now? --Tonefish 13:40, 19 July 2008 (PDT)

No you are not being silly. Yes it is a good idea. So good we did start experimenting with it Category:Timeline but it will be (yet another) huge job. The "Biography by default" is also close to my own thinking - I envisage something like the Previous/Next box on the albums page to click through the biography with a list of Related articles covering the same time frame as the article you are reading Duncan 20:08, 19 July 2008 (PDT)

"Hiding your light under a bushel" eh? I feel like I've just read "Beautiful Losers" and found the best firework at the bottom of the box. Love the finesse of including the month! (All power to the 'Big E' for its birth).

Is there any reason why we can't all start punting dates into foot of pages as we create them (or access them)? Appreciate you guys are 'forced' to check they're correct, but equally, it 'forces' the uploader to have a date/timeframe in the item itself (where possible). There are going to be a few 'anomalies' to sort out, i.e: should FZ's Bio be just 1940 or 1940-1993? My view is 'first appearance', so it would just be 1940. There may be instances where a date is not possible (can't think of any examples, but my Grand Master taught me never to assume), in which case we put in "unknown" or "TBV" (to be verified)...or simply a question-mark:"?"

If the Month (and even the Day) is added, where possible, this would enable your 'Previous/Next' idea to also come to fruition...I believe this is an incredibly powerful 'tool' in the wiki database, so I can't see why you're reticent to adopt it. Other than 'lack of editing time' are there pitfalls I haven't envisaged?

If it's OK with you guys I'm willing to spend a few hours a week methodically putting dates in; Say - albums/recordings/dvds first, then musicians, then articles, etc, etc. About 70% of it is going to be a laborious but straightforward 'cataloging' process - the remainder might be more complex, but a hurdle that will doubtless get resolved by some means & effort. --Tonefish 06:27, 20 July 2008 (PDT)

Suggestion to improve search engine - spell check?

...Seeing as many words and phrases found in the Zappa universe can be so out there, it becomes quite annoying sometimes when, searching for information with the engine comes up with nothing repeatedly. How about a suggested spell checked list of options? The most obvious and annoying aspect being of that even the lack of a correctly placed comma, hyphen or other piece of english can bring no result or suggest of. Example, a search of 'Hes So Gay' and 'Joes Garage' comes up with nothing. Just a few changes could make the engine that much better and add to an already amazing site.

Side Projects - Album art

Hi,

I notice you don't have pictures of:

1) Lenny Bruce - The Berkeley Concert

2) GTO's - Permanent Damage

3) Ruben and the Jets - For Real

4) Grand Funk Railroad - Good Singin' Good Playin'

I don't have the original vinyl, but I have all four on CD and I can send you scans of them. --Zenbiscuits 08:30, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Zenbiscuits, Feel free to send your scans to killuglyradio@gmail.com and I'll make sure they are uploaded to the wiki. Thanks!
