The "Short Forest" makes various occurences in Zappa's work, although it is never really explained what it is exactly. Songs mentioning or alluding to the Short Forest include:
- "Toads Of The Short Forest" on Weasels Ripped My Flesh: the song title is the only clue.
- "It Just Might Be A One-Shot Deal" on Waka/Jawaka: the second verse of the lyrics can be interpreted as a reference to the Short Forest as it mentions not only "a forest [that] grows up / From the dirt on the floor" but also a frog that "dumped [that dirt] beside the door" (alluding to "Toads of the Short Forest").
- "The Adventures Of Greggery Peccary" on Läther/Studio Tan: when Greggary is pursued by the Hunchmen in the third movement, he "takes the Short Forest Exit off the express way" and follows "a bumpy trail off the main Short Forest Road" while the Hunchmen "rumble through the Short Forest" and eventually lose him.
- "Camarillo Brillo" on Over-Nite Sensation: the woman described in the lyrics is also connected with the Short Forest ("She ruled the Toads of the Short Forest / And every newt in Idaho").
