'''Frank Zappa:''' Wenn die Jugendlichen sich irgendwie sowas wie Verantwortlichkeit verschaffen könnten ... Mit anderen Worten, es wird ja doch viel über Revolution geredet: "Ha, wir werden Revolution machen, Mann, wir machen Revolution ..." Sie könnten allen erzählen, was los ist, aber sie wollen nicht. Die Jugendlichen heute, so wie sie sind, haben die Macht, wirklich etwas aufzureissen. Denen könnte das ganze beschissene Land ''gehören.'' Verstehen Sie, so dass es ihnen gehört, und dass man es auch ''sieht.'' Jetzt gehört es ihnen, ohne dass sie es wissen. Sie sind die wichtigste Konsumentengruppe; sie haben die Wirtschaft der Nation am Sack. Aber man muss denen mal klar machen, was das heisst.<br>

Direkt und indirekt kontrollieren sie die Produktion aller grossen Industrien. Automobile werden so entworfen, dass der junge Mann in der Familie dem Alten klar macht: "Das is'n klasse Schlitten, Daddy." Und das funktioniert auch, also sagt der Vater: "Mm, das ist wirklich ein heisser Ofen, kommt mir vor, als ob ich nochmal 20 bin, mit dem Ding unterm Hintern." Die Alten identifizieren sich mit den Jungen, und die Jungen machen denen 'ne ganze Menge Arbeit mit der Geschmacksbildung. Natürlich haben bis jetzt die meisten Hersteller nicht die leiseste Ahnung, was die Jugend wirklich will, oder wohinter sie her ist. Nur ein paar bringen es tatsächlich fertig den Jungen wirklich was anzubieten, was ''up to date ist'' und worauf die stehen.<br>

'''EVO:''' Was meinen Sie damit?<br>
'''Frank Zappa:''' Ein paar Textilfabrikanten. Die Schallplattenindustrie versucht mitzuhalten. Schaffts aber meistens nicht, ungefähr ein Jahr, würd ich sagen, hinkt sie hinterher. Aber fast alles andere hat sich nur irgend ein junger Manager ausgedacht; so'n Typ meine ich: etwa 30 Jahre alt, der auf dem College wahrscheinlich massenhaft rumgevögelt hat und den alle andern Knilche in der Fabrik bewundern. Er sagt: "Ich weiss, was die Jugend will. Schaut doch selbst, wie jung ich noch bin." Er trommelt auf seine Brust und macht sich in der Firma wichtig. Er sagt: "Ich kenne doch die Jugend. Die wollen irgendwas Flottes. Hier hab ich zum Beispiel ...". Reisst das mal ebenso auf 'nem Meeting an, und dann sagen alle: "Klar, die Jugend ansprechen. Das ist die Masche. Pop Art, yeah yeah yeah." Und dann machen sie ein paar Pyjamas mit [[wikipedia:Campbell Soup Company|Campbell-Konservendosen]] überall drauf und machen ein Riesengeschäft. Yes, Sir."<br>

So war's bis jetzt. Wenn sich die Jungen nur überall zusammentun würden und mal Inventur machen würden, sich ein Programm machen würden. Sie könnten das Land übernehmen und managen. Ich für meinen Teil fände es zum Kotzen, wenn sie jetzt damit loslegen wollten. Denn sie sind noch gar nicht im Stande irgendetwas zu managen. So wie sie jetzt sind, können sie noch nicht mal hin und zurück aufs Klo, ohne dass sie über die Tapete stolpern, Ich würde zum Beispiel sagen, dass es bei den Wahlen von 1972 durchaus drin ist, dass ein Kandidat gewählt werden könnte, der weder Republikaner noch Demokrat sein muss, sondern bloss jugendorientiert.<br>

Es ist möglich, dass bis dahin vielleicht doch ein Stimmrecht für die 18jährigen durchgedrückt würde und wir einen 18jährigen Präsidenten bekommen könnten. Ich weiss, ein Haufen Leute hätte Angst vor einem 18jährigen Präsidenten, aber ich habe Angst vor den Präsidenten, die über 30 sind.<br>

'''EVO:''' Was halten Sie von, sagen wir, den [[wikipedia:Peaceniks|Peaceniks]], [[wikipedia:Lyndon B. Johnson|Johnson]], [[wikipedia:Vietnam War|Süd-Vietnam]] und ...<br>
'''Frank Zappa:''' Peaceniks ... Scheissdreck. Demonstrationen dieser Art sind zwecklos. Die sind nicht effektiv. Die Leute haben eine irregeleitete Vorstellung von dem, was wirkliche Politik bedeutet. Ich kann nicht glauben, dass diese Leute wirklich meinen, wenn sie mit einem Schild herumlaufen, auf dem "Peace" ... na gut, würd ich sagen, okay, krebst nur herum mit eurem Schild, und ihr werdet schon sehen, was dann passiert. Saudumm ist das.<br>

Am Heiligenabend war ich oben in der Stadt und geriet mitten in so 'nen Vietnam-Friedensmarsach hinein, und Mann, da liefen doch diese Leute einfach so die Strasse entlang, und es war kalt, und sie trugen Einkaufstüten wo "Stop the War" draufstand. Da war die Frau mit ihrer Einkaufstüte und einem Haufen Flugblättern, und sie sang: ''"Stop the war in Vietnam, bring the troops back home. Stop the war in Vietnam, bring the troops back home."''<br>

Den ganzen Weg runter. Bis sie heiser war. Heiser für nichts. Vielleicht geht in ihren Köpfen folgendes vor: Pass auf, jemand wichtiges in dieser Stadt sieht uns hier herumlaufen, und der wird sagen: "Die Öffentlichkeit ist aufgebracht über den Krieg in Vietnam," und er wird's einem von seinen einflußreichen Freunden erzählen, und dieser Typ wird nach Washington laufen, und die dort werden davon hören, und die werden Schluß machen mit dem Krieg. Es ist doch ''möglich,'' dass sowas in ihren Köpfen vorgeht. Aber das ist totaler Blödsinn! Der Krieg muss beendet werden. Es ist ein habsüchtiger Krieg. So wie alle Kriege, schätze ich. Sogar die Kreuzzüge. Aber so lasst sich das nicht machen.<br>

'''EVO:''' Was ist Ihrer Meinung nach der richtige Weg?<br>
'''Frank Zappa:''' Nur der Präsident kann mit dem Krieg Schluss machen. Und wenn man jemanden will, der dieses Land so regiert, wie man's gerne haben möchte, und wenn man ein Peacenik ist und will, das irgendetwas getan wird, also Frieden meine ich, dann soll man jemanden dahinsetzen, der auch etwas tun kann. Man muss Leute in den Kongress holen, die etwas tun.<br>

Die Peacelöcher, Mann, die haben doch keine Ahnung, wer oder was hinter der Regierung steckt. Die meisten Leute, von denen es heisst, ja die sind in der Regierung, ''tun'' doch überhaupt nichts, wenn man genau hinguckt, denn die Macht ist in Wirklichkeit in den Händen von wenigen. Und von denen sind viele ''nicht in'' der Regierung, denn die Regierung wird teilweise vom Big Business kontrolliert. Die Machtstruktur ist fast so wie bei südamerikanischen Regierungen, wo das Militär die Führer vor dem Volk beschützt.<br>

Wo wäre der Präsident ohne die SS-Leute um ihn herum? Was wären wir ohne den CIA? Ich glaube, es wurde höchste Zeit, dass die Jugend herausfand, dass die Nation, zu der sie gehört, auf einer gigantischen Lüge aufgebaut ist. Und weil sie alle hier leben, müssen sie alle das Stigma ertragen von der gesammelten Scheisse ihrer Vorfahren, Mann.<br>

Die kamen in ein Land und haben es einfach vergewaltigt. Die haben das ganze verfickte Land auf den Hund gebracht. Gleich am Anfang. Die ersten Siedler waren Arschlöcher. Guck sie Dir doch an; ein Haufen Leute aus englischen Gefängnissen. ''Die Originalamerikaner.'' Der Felsen von Plymouth. ''Shazam.'' Sie kamen hier an, nicht wahr. Diejenigen, die die Überfahrt überlebt hatten; schrecklich, mitten im Winter über den Atlantik, wahrscheinlich haben sie nur überlebt, weil sie die Leichen der Verreckten auffrassen.<br>

Es war einfach ein Haufen religiöser Fanatiker, die hier landeten und die Schiss vorm Ficken hatten, und die eine industrielle Gesellschaft aufbauten. Und hier sass ein Haufen wunderbarer Indianer, die schon sehr hip waren – auf geistiger Ebene – und denen dieses verfickte Land ''gehörte.'' Und dann kamen diese Kretins, nicht wahr, kommen hier rüber und reissen sich das Land unter den Nagel, im Namen von Jesus Christus und dem Kreuz, im Namen des Felsens von Plymouth, im Namen der Schnallen an ihren Hüten, und sie holen sich einen Truthahn und schreiben diese ganze Scheisse auf, damit die Kinder sich damit identifizieren können und – haste was kannste – wir haben eine Nation.<br>

Es war alles falsch von Anfang an. Sie haben's sorgfältig verarztet. Und jedes Jahr schmieren sie neue Vaseline drauf. Sie sagen: "Also, na schön, George Washington hat den Kirschbaum nicht ''wirklich'' abgehackt, und äh, er hat nicht wirklich zu seinem Vater gesagt 'Ich kann nicht lügen'."<br>

Das hat er in ''Wirklichkeit'' alles nicht getan. Er war nur in ''etwa'' so. Sehr bald wird es heissen, dass er schwul war. Und alle die wirklichen Tatsachen über diesen Typ. Und dazu diese Krankengeschichten von Lincoln und all den anderen Helden. Also wissen Sie. Aber ... vielleicht kommt es nicht so weit.<br>

Ich glaube, die Jugend ist augenblicklich in einer sehr zwiespältigen Situation. Sie kontrolliert tatsächlich das Land. Vom ökonomischen Gesichtspunkt aus. Aber sie sind auch die Zielscheibe für den Hass der ganzen Welt auf dieses Land, weil die, die das Land bisher regiert haben, immer so habsüchtig gewesen sind.<br>

Überlegen Sie mal, Ihre eigene Mutter und Ihr Vater, Mann. Und damit es überhaupt eine Revolution geben kann, müssen sie sich gewissermassen von ihren Eltern lossagen. Sie müssen sich mal klar darüber werden, was Mammi und Pappi wirklich sind, und das wird für viele hart sein. Es ist eine Sache, meine ich, wenn man sagt: "Ich hasse meine Mutter, ich hasse meinen Vater, dieses verdammte Arschloch will mir nicht die Wagenschlüssel geben."<br>

Aber es ist 'ne andere Sache, ihn anzuschauen und zu sehen, daß er ein Feigling ist. Und er ist noch Alkoholiker, und wenn er das nicht ist, dann schluckt er irgendwelche Pillen, und er ist ein Lügner, genau wie deine Mutter. Und sie sind alle einfach ''verfault'', Mann, sie haben einen miesen Geschmack . Sie suchen sich die scheusslichsten Gardinen und Möbel aus. Sie wissen schon. Sie sind beschissen.<br>

Versuche Sie mal, eine ganze Nation von Teenagern dahin zu bringen, dass sie Mammi und Pappi wirklich so sehen. Das ist schon eine ziemliche Arbeit, aber man kann es schaffen.<br>

Nun ist die Frage, was sollen sie tun, wenn sie Mammi und Pappi einmal von der richtigen Perspektive gesehen haben? Sie sollen die alten Vorstellungen durch die Wahrheit ersetzen. Man soll ihnen ja keinen Mammi- und Pappi-Ersatz oder irgend so eine Scheisse geben. Selbstvertrauen sollten sie bekommen. Sie müssen den Sprung schon selbst machen. Sie sollten alle kollektiv Abbitte leisten für Sünden ihrer Eltern. ''"Ganz rein will sein, weil meine Eltern so verfault sind."'' Das sollten sie wirklich tun. Sie sollten wirklich ausbrechen und wirkliche Menschen sein. Was für eine Utopie!<br>

'''EVO:''' Glauben Sie, dass irgendeine Art Psychotherapie dabei helfen könnte, ein wirklicher Mensch zu werden?<br>
'''Frank Zappa:''' Ja natürlich, die ''Mothers.''<br>

'''Frank Zappa:''' Diese vergammelten Mutterficker! Diese Arschlöcher! Diese Idioten! Diese Feiglinge! Mann, das sind doch Mammi und Pappi, sie stecken nur in einer anderen Uniform! Die armen Schweine, die sich selbst hinters Licht führen. (Nachäffend:) "Ich besuche einen Analytiker. Ich habe diesen tollen Analytiker gefunden, er kostet nicht viel, und er kann einem wirklich helfen. Er erklärt mir genau, warum es bei mir nicht ''kommt."''<br>

Inzwischen ist dieser Psychiater selbst so pervers, dass er es nicht aushalten kann. Haben Sie jemals versucht, Stunden über Stunden jedermanns Probleme über sich ergehen zu lassen? Mann, genau so gut kann man auch in der TBC-Abteilung eines Krankenhauses ohne Gesichtsschutz arbeiten. Diese Typen müssen einfach die kranksten Typen auf der Welt sein. Es bleibt ihnen einfach nichts anderes übrig, wenn sie den ganzen Tag dieses Zeug anhören müssen. Das muss einfach schrecklich erdrückend sein ...<br>

'''EVO:''' Was halten Sie von Zen und Yoga?<br>
'''Frank Zappa:''' Ich habe mich lange für Zen interessiert. Das hat mich glücklicherweise vom Katholizismus abgebracht. Ich will mal sagen, östliche Religionen sind wunderbar, egal wo man lebt, bloss nicht in den Vereinigten Staaten. Das Beste, was sie für einen tun können, ist na ja, ein gewisses Gefühl der Ruhe, wenn man weit weg von allem ist, und für sich allein meditieren kann und enthaltsam ist. Das wirkliche Ziel der östlichen Religionen, die mystischen Erfahrungen und all das, diese Ziele in einer Industriegesellschaft zu erreichen ist schwierig, vielleicht sogar unmöglich.<br>

Und ich glaube, dass die meisten Menschen, die behaupten, sie hätten die Satori-Stufe irgendwo in den Vereinigten Saaten heute tatsächlich erreicht, nehmen uns auf den Arm. Und ich glaube, diese Art von Erleuchtung steht in keinem Verhältnis zu der Menge von Zen-Liedern, die man singen kann.<br>

Die Leute neigen dazu, jedenfalls heute, das mit einer, äh, Art intellektueller Allwissenheit gleichzustellen. Davon kann aber keine Rede sein. Es ist die grosse Tragödie, dass es den Underground gar nicht wirklich gibt; denn wenn es ihn gäbe, Mann, das würde die schon ziemlich erschrecken. Die meisten Leute, die angeblich Teil des Undergrounds sind, sind sehr feige ... und dumm.<br>

'''EVO:''' Sie meinen, sie gehören nur deshalb dazu, weil sie anderswo nicht ankommen?<br>
'''Frank Zappa:''' Sie sind dabei, weil sie nichts anderes tun wollen. Sie sind zu faul, um etwas anderes zu tun. "He, ich hab eine Lebensart gefunden, bei der ich mich als Gemüsemann bezeichnen kann, und keiner hat was dran auszusetzen! He, kannst du mir noch eine geben?" Und wenn einer ihm an den Karren fährt, sagt er einfach: "Was willst du? Ich bin ein Individualist, und so bin ich eben."<br>

Unter denen, die ich in diesem angeblichen Underground getroffen habe, fand ich nur sehr wenige Leute, die wirklich bereit waren, irgendwas zu tun. Ich meine, keine Job, wo man sich von 9 bis 5 den Hintern platt sitzt, keinen Broterwerb; ich meine etwas tun für irgendeine Sache, eine wirkliche oder eine eingebildete. Alles ist so oberflächlich, Mann.<br>

Arschlöcher! Wenn die Typen, die glauben, sie seien im Underground, auch nur für 5 Pfennig soviel Hingabe hätten, wie die im feindlichen Lager ... man muss ... Also diese Leute, die die Kriegsmaschinerie in Gang halten, tun es wirklich mit Hingabe, Mann. Das ''muss'' man schon, wenn man es so gut macht. Diese Leute, die diese Maschinerie in Gang halten, sind sehr krank ... aber sie haben Hingabe. Und bei denen, die die Madison Avenue in Gang halten, ist es genau so, sie haben nämlich etwas, an das sie glauben können. Und die meisten stolpern über den Schnürsenkel, die Tapete, ihr "kosmisches Bewusstsein" und was weiss ich noch.<br>

Sie glauben nicht einmal, dass etwas geschieht, weil sie sich immer noch fragen, ob nun die Phantasie Realität ist  oder die Realität Phantasie ist. Sie sind sich nicht sicher. Sie sind völlig verwirrt.<br>
Aber die andern Typen da draussen, die wissen was los ist. "Ich habe einen Dollar ... Wenn ich dies tue und wenn ich jenes tue, werde ich 2 Dollar haben. Und ich glaube daran, und es ist wahr, ich werd's euch schon noch zeigen." Und so läuft der Laden. Und auf dieser Ebene operieren sie, und sie sind zäh, Mann. Sie beissen sich fest. Und ''sie'' haben ein Land aufgebaut. Ein hässliches, verficktes Land. Und das ist es. Sie haben es getan. Mit ihren eigenen Hirnen – so gross wie Rosinen.

But everything else is from some young manager; Let's say, he's about 30, fucked around a lot at the college and every nerd in the factory envies him. He says: "I know what the kids want. Look at me how young I still am." He beats his chest and does the self-importance thing. He says: "Sure I know the kids. They want something groovy. Here is for example ...". He whips it out at some meeting and then everybody goes: "Sure, address the kids. That's the way. Pop Art, yeah, yeah, yeah." That's the way it was untill now. If only the kids would stick their heads together everywhere and take an inventory, make a programm. They could take over and manage the country. Personally it would make me sick if they started with that right now. Because they aren't able to manage anything at all. Right now they can't even go to the toilet and back again without stumbling over the wallpaper. I would say for example that in the elections 1972 it could be possible that a candidate makes it that's neither a Republican nor a Democrat, just youth-oriented.<br>

It is possible that maybe they pass a law for the 18-years-old to vote and we could get a 18-year-old President. I know many people fear a 18 years old President, but I am more scared of a President that's over 30.<br>

'''Frank Zappa:''' Peaceniks ... shit. Demonstrations of this kind are worthless. They are not effective. These people have some misguided idea of what real politics is about. I can't even believe that these people really mean it, when they run around with a sign, reading "Peace" ... okay, I'd say, ok, creep around with your sign and you will see what happens. That's stupid.<br>

On Christmas Evening I was up in town and ran into such a peace march, and, man, people were walking in the street and it was freezing and they were wearing shopping bags with "Stop the war" on it. There was this woman with her shopping bag and a bunch of flyers singing: ''"Stop the war in Vietnam, bring the troops back home. Stop the war in Vietnam, bring the troops back home."''<br>

All the way down. Till she had a sore throat. Sore for nothing. Maybe that's what's going on in their heads: Watch, someone important in town will see us here running around, and he will say: "The public is angry about the war in Vietnam," and he will tell one of his influental friends, and he will go to Washington, and they will hear about that and they will stop the war. It is just ''possible'' that they are thinking like this. But that's total bullshit! The war has to stop. It's a greedy war. Like all wars, I think. Even the Crusades. But you can't do it that way.<br>

'''EVO:''' What would be the right way in your opinion?<br>
'''Frank Zappa:''' Only the President can stop the war. And if you want someone to rule the country like you want it to, and when you're a Peacenik and want something done, I mean make peace, you have to put someone in office who is able to do something. You have to put someone in congress who does something.<br>

The peaceholes, man, they have no idea who or what's behind our administration. Most of the people about they say, yes they are in the administration, don't do ''anything'' when you look closely, because the power is in the hand of a few actually. And most of them are not ''in'' the administration, because the administration is partly in control by the Big Business. The structures of the power is almost like with the south american administrations, where the army has to protect the leaders from the people.<br>

Where would the President be without the Nazis around him? Where would we be without the CIA? I think it was high time for the kids to find out that the nation they're part of is built on a gigantic lie. And because they're living all here they have to put up with the stigma of the accumulated shit of their ancestors, man.<br>

They came to a country and simply raped it. The wrecked the whole fucking country. Right from the start. The first settlers were assholes. Just look at them: a bunch of people from English jails. "The Original Americans." The Rock of Plymouth. "Shazam." The came here, don't they. Those to survive the passage; horrible, crossing the Atlantic in mid-winter, probably surviving only by eating the corpses of the dead.<br>

It was a bunch of religious fanatics landing here who were afraid to fuck, building a industrial society. And sitting here was a bunch of Indians who were pretty hip – on a spiritual level – ''owning'' this fucking country. And then these cretins came, you know, they come here and snatch away the country, in the name of Jesus Christ and the Cross, in the name of the Rock of Plymouth, in the name of the buckles on their hats, and they get a turkey and write the whole story down so that their children can identify with it and – bingo – you have a nation.<br>

It was wrong from the beginning. They thoroughly fucked it up. And every year they put on new vaseline. They say: "Ok, fine, George Washington did not ''really'' chop down that cherry tree, and, er, he didn't ''really'' tell his daddy 'I cannot lie'."<br>

He did not ''really'' do all these things. He only was ''like that''. And soon they will tell he was gay. And all these real facts about this guy. And then these medical histories about Lincoln and all the other heroes. I mean, just think. But ... maybe that will not happen.<br>

I think the young people are facing a big conflict. They are in control of the country. From the economical standpoint. But they are targets for all the hate the world throws at this country, because the people that ruled it till now have been so greedy.<br>

Just think about your own mom and dad, man. And for really starting a Revolution they'd have to break with their parents first. They have to get a clear idea of what mom and dad really are, and that will be hard on many. I think it's one thing to say, "I hate my mom, I hate my dad, this damned asshole won't give me the keys for the car."<br>

But its another thing to look at him and see that he's a coward. And he is an alcoholic, and if he isn't that he takes some pills, and he's a liar like your mother. And they are all simply ''rotten'', man, they have bad taste. They choose the most ugly curtains and furniture. You know. They are shitty.<br>

Just try to make a whole nation of teenagers to see mom and dad like this. That is quite a job, but it can be done.<br>

Now you ask, what should they do after seeing mom and dad from the right perspective? They should replace the old ideas with the truth. They shouldn't be given replacements of  mom and dad or some other shit. They should get some self-confidence. They have to make the jump themselves. They should collectively apologize for the sins of their parents. ''"I want to be clean, because my parents are so rotten."'' That's what they really should do. They really should break out and become real people. What an utopia!<br>

From those I have met in this so-called Undergound very few were really willing to do something. I mean, not a job working your ass off 9 to 5, no bread job; I mean doing something for a cause, a real or an imaginary. Everything is so superficial, man.<br>

Assholes! If the guys thinking to be Underground only would have devotion for 5 cents like the guys in the opposite camp ... you have ... These people keeping the war machinery going, they are really devoted to it, man. You ''have'' to be, if you do it right. The people keeping the machinery going are really sick ... but they do it with devotion. And it's the same with the ones running Madison Avenue, because they have something they believe in. And most of them tripping over their laces, or the wallpaper, or their "cosmic consciousness" or whatever.<br>

They don't even believe that something is happening, because they are still asking themselves if fantasy is reality or reality is fantasy. They are not sure. They are completely confused.<br>

But these guys out there, they know what's happening."I have one Dollar ... if I'm doing this and doing that I will have two Dollars. I believe in this and it is real, I will show them all." And that's the way it is. And they are operating on that level, and they are tough, man. They stick to it. And ''they'' have built the whole country. An ugly fucking country. And that's it. They have done it. With their own brains – as big as raisins.
