Free Press

The Los Angeles Free Press (often referred to as "The Freep" ) was a radical/alternative weekly newspaper that first appeared in 1965 having grown out of the Faire Free Press (first published 1964) both founded by Art Kunkin. It is considered to be one of the first "underground" papers although it followed in the tradition of such papers as New York's The Village Voice (first published 1955). It's circulation grew from a 10,000 in the first few years to 125,000 at it's peak. It ceased publication in 1976.

It benefited from the growing "counter culture" of the mid 60's and the development of "cold type" print production which allowed for a cheaper and more flexible means of creating newspapers.
