The E.A.R. Unit was founded in March 1981 by a group of performers and composers with the goal of developing the first true repertory ensemble for new music in Los Angeles.

They performed the world premiere of Don Preston's "The Bride Stripped Bare." at the Bing Theater in the Los Angeles County Art Museum, where the E.A.R. Unit are the Ensemble-in-Residence, on May 28th 1997.

One of the founders, and long time member, of the E.A.R. Unit, Art Jarvinen, asked FZ for an arrangement of While You Were Out for the ensemble.
