James Leavelle, featured on the album cover of "We're Only In It For The Money".

James R. 'Jim' Leavelle (23 August 1920 - 29 August 2019) was an American detective and police officer.

Born in Red River County, Texas, Leavelle served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (a program under then-president Franklin D. Roosevelt to boost public infrastructure by employing young men affected by the Great Depression). After enlisting in the US Navy in 1939, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii aboard the USS Whitney where he was on duty during the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.

From 1950 until 1975 he was part of the Dallas Police Department. Though retired, he still kept giving interviews to groups ranging from schools to media organizations.

On November 24, 1963, Leavelle was assigned to escort Lee Harvey Oswald from the Dallas City Jail and was handcuffed to him when Jack Ruby shot Oswald in front of live television cameras. Leavelle’s famous hat, suit, tie and handcuffs are on exhibit in the Sixth Floor Museum, located in the former Texas School Book Depository building in Dallas, Texas.

In 2013, the Dallas Police Department named its detective Of The Year award in Leavelle's honor.

Both Leavelle and Lee Harvey Oswald can be seen on the album cover of We're Only In It For The Money, near the Statue Of Liberty. [1]
