There are several ways to look at FZ's works...

  • Alphabet Soup: from "200 Motels" through "Zoot Allures": An alphabetical overview of FZ's discography, including the most common assorted improvisations. You can view it below on this page.
  • It's All History: from "Freak Out!" through "Joe’s Domage": taking into account the release dates of the albums (Album History)
  • The Chronology: from "Mystery Disc" through "The Yellow Shark": based on the recording dates of the tracks (Album Chronology)
  • How "Logical" is all this Stuff?: an attempt to group the many recordings in a sort of “logical” way, marked by an orderly and aesthetically consistent relation of parts... (Album Grouping)
  • ZAPPAMANIA!: It’s not exactly Beatlemania, but FZ had a number of “best of” compilation, with strictly no commercial potential... (Zappamania)

Or as FZ saw it...

"It's all one album. All the material on the albums is organically related, and if I had all the master tapes and I could take a razor blade and cut them apart and put it together again in a different order, it would still make one piece of music you can listen to. Then, I could take that razor blade and cut it apart and reassemble it a different way and it would still make sense. I could do this 20 ways. The material is definitely related."

- Frank Zappa - Rolling Stone (1968)
